I recently was the on the same hunt as OP and tried this out for trimming some video off the beginning and end. I spent nearly an hour in tutorials before figuring it out. Then I ran into issues trying to actually generate the final video. I ended up giving up and moving on to the next software in my list. Avidemux knocked out what I wanted in under 10 minutes after install. But, I'm not sure if it has enough features for OP's needs.
I have no doubt that it is easy once you know how. Most tools are like that.
But, it was not intuitive for a novice with no video editing experience. I never found the 'blade tool'. I eventually found the entry and exit point hotkeys while watching a tutorial on something similar but unrelated. I DID eventually figure out how to make a video with the pieces that I wanted trimmed out.
What made me give up was trying to run the encoding job and encountering some error with a very unhelpful description.
